Faithful Dog Hachikō was an Akita Inu from Japan, purchased by Hidesaburō Ueno, an agricultural professor at the Tokyo Imperial University with an interest in the Akita breed.

Ueno's partner and dogs would walk him to Shibuya Train Station every morning, and walk back every afternoon to meet him upon his returning commute. Sadly, when Hachi was two, Ueno passed away suddenly from an aneurysm at the university, and never returned home. For the next nine years, Hachi would maintain his routine of walking to the station every day to wait for his master.

As chance would have it, Hirokichi Saitō, the found of a breed preservation society spotted Hachi in Shibuya.  Upon learning his story, he published several articles on the matter and Hachi became a national sensation, beloved for his undying fidelity. Saitō researched the breed and found there were less than fifty Akita dogs left in Japan, prompting efforts to bring them back from the brink of extinction which likely would have pleased Professor Ueno.

There are statues of Hachi at the station and the university campus.

Perfect for dog lovers (especially owners of Japanese Akita Inu and American Akita), history buffs, fans of Japan.
