Ciapek was a stray terrier mix who became the mascot of the 305 Polish Bomber Squadron, a regiment formed in England by the exiled Polish air force. He flew on eight successful raids and earned a carved wooden bomb charm on his collar for each one. On the ninth mission, the plane disappeared, presumed to be shot down over the North Sea. Amazingly, Ciapek was found alive and a bit soggy on a beach in Norfolk. He was returned to his squadron and subsequently banned from flying, which he was very cross about.
Perfect for dog lovers (especially owners of Airedales and sassy scruffy terriers), and history buffs.
